We originally posted this on July 8, 2013, but today the inevitable happened and this time the Viking D3 Dishwasher died!    Mind you our Viking D3 refrigerator has died 3 times since our purchase in 2013 and the Viking D3 Microwave has also been serviced 2 times.

The Dishwasher error code indicates that the Drain Pump has problem!   The next one major failure is the Viking D3 Range which is already giving us the problems with the sparking all the time despite the burning coming on.

We still maintain our avoid at all cost recommendation for this brand for Small kitchen remodels.

If you are considering the Viking D3 appliances for your kitchen remodel, consider yourself warned.   In 2013, we selected Viking D3 appliances for our small kitchen remodel in Los Gatos.  And we have been sorry ever since.

Guranteed failure

In the past year alone, the Viking D3 refrigeration has failed 2 times.  Once the compressor failed during the 100 degree heat of Summer and last week the freezer started leaking.  Prior to that the Microwave/Convection Oven combo failed twice where the board has to be replaced each time.  The last failure of VIking Microwave Oven was the door which was not opening.  We had to push the button with one hand and yank the door with the other.

Part Shortage

When our Viking D3 fridge failed the 1st time during the 100 degree heat of Silicon Valley summer, the regional service manager offered to reimburse us for a rent-a-fridge since the replacement part would take more than 2 months to arrive!  Yes, the compressor which had failed and needed to be replaced had lag of more than 2 month.  We were lucky to have access to another fridge in the Studio, but the frequent trips to reach the fridge was pleasant reminder of our mistake in choosing Viking.

This Viking D-3 line of appliances from the Viking Range  Corporation was intended to deliver additional features such as Control, Power and Easy Clean up.   These pro-style appliances offers high-heat range and cooktops , multiple sinks, wall-mounted pot-fillers, deep-fryers, large capacity freezer and refrigerators.  Some of the manufacturers are even offers wood-fired Pizza ovens for consumers.

Viking’s D-3 line offers a Microwave oven that doubles as a convection Oven as well.  But as the first batch of these appliances have been rushed to the market to meet the rising demand of consumers, the products don’t meet the quality standards that we have come to expect from these brands.   In fact, in our Small Kitchen Remodel for the Los Gatos, we installed Viking D3 appliances including Microwave Oven Model Number: RDNIR206SS !  This Microwave which costs us close to $900, has been subject to 3 service calls in ONE year and the vent/fan is a weak one at best which would has not survive this small kitchen in Los Gatos let alone a commercial kitchen!!   And to make matters worse, part orders from Viking take more than 5-6 weeks which is utterly shameful.

High Price

Viking D3 is one of the highest priced consumer brands for kitchen appliances compared to GE Profile and other high-end brands.  Given the poor quality of the Viking D3 line, we can not recommend the product given the poor quality of the product.

And in June 2013, the Viking D3 Refrigerator Model Number: RDDFF23SS02 which developed problems with it’s freezer unit in less than one year of operation!   After sending a technician with no Refrigeration training by his own admission, Viking sent their own rep to diagnose a problem which is now a bad compressor!

Insufficient Warranty

We are convinced that the standard 3 year warranty that’s offered by Viking is not enough to cover the massive failures that is built-into to this product line.   Let us know.
