Since when FREE is a 4 letter word

Are you fed up with the offer of Free stuff on the web?  What do you think when you see an offer for free services or products on the web?

We are not sure when it happened, but it appears that FREE has become a bad word these day when it comes to digital marketing.  We can’t give away Free Appraisals, Free Rental Survey and Free Home Inspection any more.

We suspect that part of the reason is that since the word is so over-used we have all become desensitized to it and don’t expect much from something that’s free. We all have returned from technology conferences with tons of FREE pens, bags and t-shirts.  Has any of those free items sparked our interest in the company who supplied us with that FREE stuff?  I suspect now since we really don’t value it.  After all, if we associated any value, we might be tempted to go to these websites and thank them for their free stuff they had given us.

In contrast there is no FREE offers on TV anymore.  In contrast with the web, there are tons of offers for useless gadgets for $19.99 and the offer of full refund if we don’t like the product.

This threads reminds me of a conversation I was having with a technology savvy neighbor who quoted me some research that as far as web content goes, we do not associate any value for items that are price less than a dollar.  Perhaps that’s why eBay does not list any items for sale that are less than 99 cents.

What do you think?  Do you offer any FREE items on your website?    We would love to hear from you.
